There are numerous resources available to help educators teach students their regular curriculum such as lesson plans, webinars, how-to videos and useful links to name a few. One way educators can help students is through teachable moments in everyday life. Here are three opportunities that teachers can use to show students how to deal with every day stressful situations.
Learn from others
We all have unique stories and experiences to share. Whether it’s with friends or parents, encourage students to express their opinions and ask questions with people they trust. Other people have experiences, whether they’re similar or completely different, and there are lessons to be learned through simple storytelling and engaging in conversation.
Find comfort in routine
The school environment can be a stressful place at times for young people. However, there are simple ways students can unwind during a hectic day. Encourage them to find something they enjoy and turn it into a routine. Reading a book or taking a daily walk around the schoolyard during lunch can be a welcome break from a stressful situation.
Put things into perspective
A negative experience can feel like the end of the world. This is especially true among children and teenagers. Reminding students to take a deep breath and reflect on the situation can help them diffuse a stressful experience. While there are bad times in our lives, there are also good times ahead as well.
