Our third Flourish+ Talk was filmed as a podcast at the Teachers Life / nowly office. This incredible (and informative) discussion featured Dr. Gillian Mandich, founder of The International Happiness Institute of Health Science Research, and two-time TEDx speaker; who has regularly appeared in the media on shows such as The Social, Marilyn Denis, Breakfast Television, and The Morning Show. Dr. Mandich was joined by Karen Goodeve, our 2024 Teachers Life Living Values Service Excellence Awardee and beloved teacher from OSSTF Peel District.
Defining Resilience?
Dr. Mandich delves into the origins of the word “resilience,” highlighting how it represents not only the ability to bounce back but also to learn and grow from life’s challenges. Karen shares her perspective on what resilience looks like post-pandemic for herself and her colleagues within the education community.
Burnout is On the Rise
One in three Canadian adults is now experiencing burnout. So, how can educators who feel overwhelmed or burned out still show up and be fully present for their students? Karen and Dr. Mandich share strategies for creating a safe, supportive environment in the classroom for both students and teachers and offer advice on recognizing when it’s time to step back and recharge.
Silence is Not Always Golden
Karen shares her personal experience with depression and talks about how educators are human and should not be expected to be perfect. From the moment Karen communicated to her students and colleagues that she struggles with depression, a weight was lifted off her shoulders.
She highlights the importance of sharing your experiences with depression and anxiety and checking in with people about their mental health to normalize it and let other people know that it’s ok to be vulnerable. We can’t do it alone and building a support system is crucial for mental wellness.
Embracing the Journey: One Happy Step at a Time
Dr. Mandich discusses the powerful mind-body connection, reminding us that constant happiness isn’t the goal. In her conversation with Karen, they explore how medication, chemical imbalances, and other factors shape mental health, while emphasizing that self-care is crucial—not just for our own well-being, but also to model healthy behaviors for others, empowering them to take care of themselves. Research shows that self-care is actually one of the most selfless actions we can take, as it benefits both ourselves and those around us.
The Negativity Bias and Growth Mindset
Dr. Mandich teaches us how our brains have been wired for ages to always be on the lookout for danger. We can begin to override this pre-installed software in our brain by practicing gratitude little by little, over time.
Karen adds that educators need to think beyond curriculum, grades, and schedules to foster safe, encouraging spaces for students. She advocates for encouraging a more positive learning process, emphasizing the importance of not becoming focused on outcomes alone.
Happiness is Not a Destination
“I’ll work really hard and then I’ll be happy.”
Have you ever said that to yourself? That narrative is in complete opposition to what the data says. Dr. Mandich explains that happiness actually precedes success and should be a daily practice. It’s not a matter of choosing happiness. Some days we just don’t feel good. We’re not going to feel happy 100% of the time. It’s about doing the things that bring us joy and peace in a consistent way to slowly, but surely replace our negative bias with positive thoughts.
Feeling guilty about taking time to recharge is common, but Dr. Mandich stresses that self-care is essential. Rather than just another item on our to-do list, self-care boosts our productivity and overall well-being. She also highlights that productivity isn’t linear—by prioritizing self-care, we can make the most of the time we have for everything else.
Practice Happy Baby Steps
They discuss how self-care is unique to each individual and emphasize the importance of doing activities that truly replenish and uplift us, whether that’s keeping a gratitude journal, gardening, or practicing yoga. Self-care can look different for everyone!
